Augustus studied the building in the distance. They were in the north after a long day driving, having started early out of London and pushing hard running through Lincoln and then York, almost now to the line separating Scotland from England. The weather had been crisp and brilliant, one of those days where the sun was blinding yet lacked the heat that the summer would bring with it.
They had paused by the side of a road to observe. Below them on the coastal plain, a massive building was well-lit as the sun was setting behind him, letting him see it as the darkness might conceal them. The breeze brought the first hints of spring to his nose.
He turned to Lady Claudette now and smiled grimly.
âItâs time,â he said simply.
She nodded and pulled back a sleeve on her jacket before she undid her cuff. Not French for her, these were simple buttons on an Archer shirt that had been tailored to fit her petite form, with a modern, folding collar rather than the older ones that attached.
He agreed with her fashion statement that far. Starched collars were a bore he could do without.
The cuff peeled back to reveal a silver chain with a variety of bangles dangling from it: gold, silver, bronze, and even a small, orichalcum cube drilled corner to corner.
She nodded and unhooked it with one hand, pulling the bracelet and handing it to him. Augustus dropped it into a velvet bag heâd prepared for exactly this reason and tied the cord, handing it back to the woman with a nod.
âNow what?â she asked, tucking it into a pocket.
âI presume that our friend, whoever she is, is now capable of actually locating you with casual divinations rather than having to put a lot of effort into it,â he replied. âBy standing here, in plain sight, it is my hope that we can draw such a creature north. The greater the alacrity with which she moves the better, as it will be something of an admission of guilt on her part.â
âSo, we are not about to rush down there and commit a trespassing?â Lady Claudette confirmed.
âNot tonight,â he smiled. âTwenty-four hours from now is an entirely different conversation, as I wanted to know the status of the Duchessâs estate without her present. Her arrival will change that scene below us. For now, let us head on to the hotel and have a late dinner as we contemplate things.â
They piled back into her car, Digby up front and Augustus, as usual, tucked in back and somewhat out of sight to think.
The Dudleys had enormous wealth, that much was obvious as they drove away. Heâd only tasted the edge of the metaphysical boundaries someone was maintaining around the grounds, but not pushed sufficient to actually trigger any alarms unless a spider had been sitting in the middle of that web watching.
It didnât feel like that was the current case, but he was playing a game with a powerful and dangerous foe now.
